What to Know Before Buying a Beading Loom

By: Julie Knapp

Similar to a fabric loom, a beading loom is used to make beautiful flat beadwork patterns. There are many varieties to choose from, depending on your preferences for price, size and project type. You'll want to make sure you invest in the right equipment, so here's what to know before you buy.

Consider Your Beading Projects
The style of the loom you choose should match the kinds of projects you hope to complete. You'd need a different apparatus for making wall hangings than bracelets. Another factor in choosing a loom is the types of beads you want to use. Most looms are made for tiny seed beads, but some are made for larger beads.

Think About Where You'll Work
Each type of loom is designed to be used differently. Some are small enough to sit on your lap while others are bigger and will need to rest on a table. Some work in a vertical pattern, some work in a horizontal pattern and some even flip over to help you complete your project. Think about how you'll feel most comfortable weaving before you make your purchase.

Decide How Much to Spend
Basic looms are incredibly affordable. If you just want to experiment with beading on a loom, you should probably stick to a simple inexpensive option. However, if you're willing to spend more or are in the market for a second loom, the extra buck can get you some extra features. Some of the pricier options are adjustable to accommodate different sizes of beads. A cheap plastic loom works well for making small jewelry items with small beads, but bigger wooden looms, which can be more expensive, are better for bigger beads and longer or wider crafts.
