Possibly the most commonly cited origination point in the history of macrame is its use by sailors on long voyages. It's said that these sailors whiled away the hours practicing knots that were essential to their work, and over time the projects evolved into decorative -- yet still functional -- nets and coverings for equipment.
Another prime theory is that macrame originated with Arabian weavers. Seeking a way to improve the look of their wares, these weavers used decorative macrame knots in the fringe of woven rugs and clothes. The widespread trade routes, as well as the dissemination of culture involved in conquest by other nations, allowed the knowledge of macrame to be spread all over the world.
A form of macrame that is not widely known began in Victorian England, by all accounts, and is commonly called Victorian lace. Modern crafters use the technique under the name micro-macrame, and often use very fine cords mixed with beads or other embellishments to create jewelry, watches and other small items. This technique generally uses silk cord, embroidery thread and other such fibers to create extremely intricate designs.
Though the knowledge of macrame had died out at one point, the technique was revived about 50 years ago with the rough creations in hemp cord so widely recognized as "hippie craft." Since this rediscovery, macrame has seen an explosion in popularity that promises not to let the craft die out again. As for the true origin of macrame -- that may never be conclusively determined.
