While it's easy to find free string art designs on the Web, experienced string art crafters may want to take a turn in designing their own string art designs. Once you become familiar with some of the basic shapes that can be created for string art, you can combine them to create new designs. Start with a pencil, paper and ruler. Since line designs are created when a line connects between points, a full pattern must plot out these points carefully. Once the line drawings are made, you can transfer the pattern to velvet-covered corkboard and continue with your string art project.
The simplest pattern is made from a right angle. Mark out a right angle using the ruler, and divide each of the sides into segments. An equal number of points should be on the horizontal and vertical axes-8 segments is a good number to start with. Number each of the segments 1 through 8 on both axes. Using the ruler, draw a line from the vertical point 8 to the horizontal point 1. Draw another from H7 to V2, then H6 to V3 and so on. When you finish, you'll see a curved shape made from straight lines only.
Using the concepts from angle string art designs, put two right angles together to make a square. Again, 8 points is a good number for beginners. When numbering, make sure the 1 points are at two corners and the 8 points are at the other corners. Draw straight lines just as you did in the first example, but then repeat on the other side of the square. The result is a round shape in the center of a rectangle. Again, a curved shape is made from completely straight lines.
Using Different Shapes
Once you've drawn some basic line shapes as patterns for string art projects, try using different shapes. Try using a large circle and marking evenly spaced points around the diameter. Draw a straight line from the exact top of the circle to the exact bottom point. Draw another line from one point to the right of the top, connecting with the point to the left of the bottom center point. Continue this way until you've connected all the points and created a spider web design. Overlap different kinds of shapes to create new images, and experiment with skipping points along the way to create interesting gaps and spaces in the string art.
Create string art earrings to complete a retro look or make a bold statement. While the technique of stringing is not too difficult, prepare a practice set of earrings before moving onto the real thing.
Who invented string art? Several people contributed to this popular -70s craft, but it really has its roots in mathematics.
