There isn't a right way or a wrong way how to make a magic wand-and the magic wand will tell you how it wants to be made. Choose the wood you want to make the wand out of-any type of wood that feels "right" to you will be right.
There are some types of wood that are believed to have "special" magic. This is wood that has fallen from a tree, but is still fresh, and wood that was struck off the tree by lightning.
If you want to choose a type of wood that is not local, look at lumberyards-they often have wood from other locals. If you choose a rare type of wood, find out where the wood originates-depending on your beliefs, you may want to research the locale.
To carve the magic wand by hand, you will need a wood rasp, carving knife and sand paper. Look at the wood and meditate on the properties of the wood. If you have a design in mind, start carving the design. The magic wand will form itself as you carve. The design may be what you envisioned-or it may be something else that lends itself to the properties of the wood.
If you wish to use power tools, you can use them, but it is better if you can carve the wand by hand. Using power tools-depending on your beliefs-may take some of the power from the wood because of the vibration caused.
Once the wand is finished, coat the wand with tung oil or wax for protection. You can also use stain if you wish, but the Tung oil has better magical properties. You should also make a cloth cover or bag for the wand to protect it from nicks and scratches.
