Simple Mind Reading Tricks: Math Psychosis

The answer is always 5. If your group includes math whizzes, you might want to try another trick or quickly move on to another display of your mental feats.

Ask a participant to think of a number. Make sure that the person thinks of a relatively simple number, because he or she is going to have to make calculations. Say the number the participant thinks of is 6.

Now, ask the participant to multiply that number by 2. So, the person is thinking 12.

Next will be a little addition. Add 10 to the number. The participant is hopefully thinking 22.

Okay. Now divide the number by 2, for 11. Tell the person to subtract the original number, 6, from this number. The answer is 5.

Expect at any time that the participant will become hopelessly tangled up in working the numbers. Just start all over with good humor.

Psychic Mind Reading: Identifying the Dead

This trick requires three participants. Keep in mind that presentation is everything in your performance.

Take a piece of paper and rip the paper in thirds. Have two people write down the names of people that they know who are alive. Ask one person to write a name of someone who is dead. Simply make sure that the person who is in charge of the dead person has the piece of paper that is torn on two edges. Ask the participants to fold the slips of paper and place them in a hat.

Pour on the drama. You can have yourself blindfolded. You can grit your teeth and squeeze your eyes shut while you rub your temples. You can ask people to help you concentrate. Do what it takes and then put your hand in the hat and find the piece of paper with two rough edges, but don't pull it out right away. Fumble and grimace. You want to make people think that this is very hard.

Get rid of all of the pieces of paper quickly after the trick is over.
