How to Do Levitation Tricks

By: Laura Evans

Levitation tricks can be an important part of a magician's performance. These types of tricks don't necessarily have to be expensive. You can do many levitation tricks without having to add anything significant to your magic supplies.

Levitation Tricks: Cup Levitation

You can do this trick using an large empty Styrofoam cup. Show the audience the cup inside and out.

When the moment is right, hold the cup in both hands with your thumbs towards the back of the cup. As you are announcing that you will be making the cup "fly," push one of your thumbs through the back of the cup. Just make sure that your audience can't see the maneuver.

Then, with flair, slowly open your hands up in front of the cup at the same time. Your thumb will actually be holding the cup up, but it will look like the cup is flying freely. To heighten the effect, push your hands forward a little. Then, slowly close your hands and grab hold of the cup again, effectively "taking the cup out of the air."

Remove your thumb and get rid of the cup.

Levitation Tricks: The Chameleon

In order to prepare for this trick, you will need to cut a block of wood that is smaller than your foot. You may have to play with this a little until you get the right size because the block has to be small enough to fit inside of your sock and small enough to not draw attention to itself, but large and stable enough that it can support your weight. You also don't want to crash off of the piece of wood and break your ankle while trying to perform this trick.

In addition, the block of wood should be painted the same color as the floors or walls in the room where you will be performing. Think black, white or gray.

You will be hiding the block in your sock before your performance. Therefore, wear long pants during your act to hide the block-in-the-sock.

When it's time to perform, lean down and  pretend to tie your shoe while you take the block out and put it on the floor. When you are ready, get your patter going and then hop onto the block on one foot. This should not be a lengthy trick, as the longer you stand on the block, the more likely your audience will realize that you are, in fact, standing on a block.

This trick can be seen from three sides.

Remember to practice, practice, practice before you perform!
