Improving Craps Odds

By: Maeve Rich

Can you improve your craps odds? Everyone who plays craps wants to win, but obviously not everyone can. Gambling means that you're taking your chances and relying on luck to come out ahead - usually. Here are some tips to help you out next time you're at the casino.

Keeping your bets small is the best way to come out ahead at the end of the day. Bet double on the 6 or 8, which will give you the best chance of winning.

Go with your gut. This might sound ineffective, but a lot of gambling is just luck. Look at the shooter. Does she look like she knows what she's doing? Does she look "lucky" to you? If you have a good feeling about someone, go with it (again, this is a good time to keep those bets small).

To cut the house advantage down to zero on at least one of your bets, place a bet after the point is determined. You have to place a bet on the pass line before the point is determined in order to do this, but it gives you an extra shot at winning.

If someone is unlucky or inexperienced, take the don't pass line. Actually, taking the don't pass line and sticking with it for an extended period of time as opposed to putting more money down on the pass line is generally effective in the long run. Just remember that if you've taken the don't pass line and you're winning, that probably means that everyone else is losing. And if everyone else is losing, you want to be subdued about your own success, or else you're going to make a lot of other gamblers very angry.

If you're on a roll, make sure that you know when to cut your losses. It's unlikely that you'll do better than making 20% on your bets, so choose a percentage like that that signals your time to walk away.
