When you know how to take body measurements, you're on your way to being able to create custom clothing for yourself and those around you. Taking measurements is an important part of learning how to sew because you'll improve the fit of the garment. You can also use body measurement calculations to make sure that you are buying the right-size clothing from online stores.
With body measurements, you normally need a few different numbers. The bust measurement, the high-chest measurement, the waist measurement, the hip measurement, the waist length measurement and the skirt or pants length measurement are the most common measurements that you'll need.
Take the bust measurement by measuring around the fullest part of the bust. The measuring tape should be kept straight across the back of the shoulder area. The tape should be tight, but not too tight. You should be able to fit one finger underneath the tape, but no more than that.
This high chest measurement should be placed up high under the armpits. The tape should be straight across the chest but not too tight. The high-chest measurement is used along with the bust measurement to get the best fit on jackets and tops.
For this measurement, you should place the tape around the natural waistline. You need to hold the tape snug, but it shouldn't be squeezing your model's body. To find the natural waistline, look to the part of the body that is narrowest and above the hip bone.
Take this measurement across the widest part of the hips. Be sure that the tape is even all the way around the body. It can be anywhere from 15 to 25 centimeters below the natural waist.
Waist Length Measurement
This is different from the waist measurement. You'll need to measure from the bottom of the back of the neck all the way down to the natural waistline. The person you are measuring should be standing straight up.
Skirt Or Pants Length Measurement
For this measurement, you'll need to go from the natural waist line down to where the pants or skirt hem will be.
With these sets of measurements, you'll be able to easily sew custom clothing or shop online and have clothes that fit.
