Easy Quilt Patterns: Lynn Bag

By: Lynn H. Castille

If you want to create a fun hobo bag to tout your essentials around, try using easy quilt patterns like this one to create a great Lynn bag that is sure to wow all of your family and friends.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Fat quarters
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Elastic

Creating Your Bag
From one fat quarter, cut a 7" x 11" strip of fabric for the center of the bag. From another fat quarter (different fabric), cut two 9" x 11" strips of fabric to form the two sides for the bag.

Sew the fabric strips with the right sides together. Press seam allowances. Fold bag in half. The top is the wider opening, the sides the shortest. Make a lining the same way. Use coordinating fat quarters of your choice of lining fabric. I used leftover pieces of unbleached muslin for my lining.

Sew the sides of the bag and also sew the sides of the lining. On the wrong side of the bag, mark ½ inch up on the seam on both corners. Take a ruler, and using the ½ inch mark as a guide, draw a triangle across each corner using a fabric marking pen or pencil. Do the same on the lining. Sew along the marking line. Do not cut.

Place the bag inside the lining with the right sides together. Pin and sew along the top edge using a ½ inch seam. Leave a three- to four-inch opening on the seam. Turn the bag right side out through the seam opening. Press upper edge of bag. Your bag will now be lined.

Sew a 5/8 inch seam along the upper edge of the bag. Leave an opening to thread a piece of half-inch elastic through. Pull the elastic as tight as you would like the bag opening.

Sew the elastic ends together. Whip-stitch the opening closed.

Creating the Strap
Cut four strips of fabric 2" x 22".

Sew two strips together on the short edges to make one strip of 44". Do the same with the other two strips. Press the seams. Sew the two long 44" strips with the right sides together. Leave an opening to turn. Turn the strip right side out and press. Whip-stitch the opening closed.

Tie a knot on each end of the strap about two inches up on each end. Pin one end just above the knot to one side seam on the hobo bag. Do the same on the other side seam. Stitch the strap to the bag at the side seams, just above the knot. Tie a knot at the top of the strap to get the desired strap length.
