Free Easy Quilt Patterns: String, Paper-Pierced Block

If you are looking for a new quilt project with a little flair, try using free, easy quilt patterns like this one to create a string, paper-pierced block.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Fabric scraps or fabric of choice
  • Paper for patterns
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Rotary cutting mat
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Ironing board

Instructions:

  • Cut eight-inch blocks of newsprint or other thin paper.
  • Cut fabric strips 2" x 12" out of scrap fabric or use fabric scraps in the size and shape they are without trimming.

Cut enough eight inch paper blocks to meet the size of your project.

If you don't have scraps of fabric or you don't want the scrappy look for your blocks, then you can choose three types of fabric and cut them into 2" x 12" strips.

  • Place a strip of fabric in the middle of your paper pattern crossways across the block.
  • Add another strip of fabric to the center strip with the right sides together. Sew the two strips together with a ¼ inch seam allowance directly to the paper pattern. Open out the strips, right side up, and iron.
  • Attach a third strip of fabric, right sides together, and sew together with a ¼ inch seam directly to the paper. Open out and iron.
  • Repeat until the side of the block is covered and no paper is showing.
  • Repeat this process on the other side of the block until no paper is showing, ironing as you add each strip of fabric.
  • Flip the block over and trim away the extra fabric along the original paper pattern piece.

If you want a pattern on your quilt when you arrange the blocks, then always use the same color fabric for your center strip.
