What are quilting fat quarters? They are those really cute bundles of quilting fabric found in the quilting section of a fabric or craft store. They are usually color coordinated or print coordinated to make a quilting project easier. In other words, fat quarters take the headache out of running around the store, or several stores, to find matching fabric.
Fat quarters are usually 18"x21 or 18x 22" and are cut from 44" to 45" wide fabric. Some fabric stores will cut fat quarters from popular fabric lines and bundle them for sale. Fat quarters allow you the chance to purchase several types of fabric without the extra cost of purchasing yardage. They also allow you the chance to add to your fabric stash without spending a lot of cash.
If you are running short on scraps for a project, you can buy fat quarters to supplement your existing scraps and then cut them into the needed squares or sizes for that scrappy project. Since they are already color or print coordinated, they make for a quick quilt top. The fat quarters can be cut into different sized rectangles and squares and pieced randomly together for a quick quilt top. Purchase a little yardage for the borders and the backing and you have a quick quilt. This works well for a baby quilt.
The next time you find yourself in the fabric section, don't pass up those cute little bundles of joy. Stop and take a peek and let your imagination soar.
