How to Sew a Simple Tote Bag
Materials You Will Need
Sewing machine
Tape measure
Pins
Fabric
Scissors
Newspaper
Use the newspaper and tape measure to create the size of pattern you desire. If you need a large piece of paper to make the strap length, simply tape newspaper pages together to get the length you require. Cut the pattern out with scissors and pin it to the fabric.
If you want to get fancy, you can use two pieces of contrasting fabric-one color of fabric for the tote itself and the second color for the strap and pockets. For the following tote, let's go simple and use just one fabric.
A good size for a tote bag is about 12 inches deep and 14 inches wide. To create this tote you'll need one piece of fabric that is 26 by 30 inches and then a strap. The piece of fabric for the strap should be about five inches in width and about one yard in length. This will give you enough of a strap to carry the tote over your shoulder or to knot it and carry it over your wrist.
To make the tote, start with the large piece of fabric. Fold it in half and then pin the two sides together. Fold each of the raw edges once, at a measurement of about one half inch, and then fold them again so that you have a full inch on each side and raw edges are turned under. Pin the edges and sew them down with the sewing machine. Do the same for the top or opening of the bag, being careful to sew all around. Because this is the opening, and the seam will be seen, take care in keeping the seam about one quarter inch from the edge of the bag opening, while at the same time making sure the raw edges are all tucked in.
The strap can be made with two pieces of material that are the same length, which you then sew on all sides except for one of the ends. When you are done sewing the three sides, use the open end to push the material into so that it can be turned right-side out. Or, you can make one wider piece and simply fold it once, sew two sides (one long and one short) and then turn it and iron it flat. To make the strap sturdier, use the sewing machine to run a stitch up both sides of the strap before attaching it to the bag.
Sew the end closed so that all raw edges are turned under and raveling cannot occur.
Pin about two inches of the strap into each side of the bag-along the seam. The ends can be sewed on the inside of the bag or on the outside, depending on your own personal preference. Once you have pinned the ends in place, carefully sew them in place. This is where all the weight of the tote will be carried, so make sure the straps are sewed on tightly.
