If your child cannot tear himself away from the television when "Bob the Builder" is on, then consider holding a construction-themed birthday party that will let kids play with their hands. The following games and activities can safely introduce kids to how construction works:
Lego Creations: Legos can get kids building without a hammer and nails. Buy several plastic buckets of Legos, making sure that each bucket includes the same number and type. Divide the kids up into teams and ask each team to build a dream house with the Legos. Each team can take the members of other teams on a "tour" of the house.
Castles In The Sandbox: A sandbox is perfect for a construction birthday party. If the weather is good, bury small prizes, like mini-dump trucks or action figures, in the sand. Set out shovels and toy backhoes, and let the kids dig up the different prizes. Provide enough prizes so everyone gets one, and direct the kids who aren't having as much luck digging to places where they might be able to dig up a prize.
Gingerbread Houses: Who says you can't have gingerbread all year long? Children are too young to be handling serious tools, but that doesn't mean they can't use flat pieces of gingerbread to make their own homes. Prepare several containers of royal icing in different colors, and bake sheets of gingerbread in different sizes. Provide each child with a gingerbread house pattern for him to work with, and he'll go home having built his very own house.
Cardboard Construction: This activity will take a little more preparation. Pick up enough large cardboard appliance boxes, and cut out windows and a door in each house. Then set out paints, markers, cardboard and decals so the children can decorate their homes. Encourage them to put their homes together and maybe even use spare cardboard boxes to create second stories or extra rooms.
With these ideas, guests will learn more about the elements of construction in a safe and fun way. Perhaps a few of them will even want to be builders and engineers when they grow up!
Party food should be the last thing you should stress over when you are planning a kids birthday party. Handling a room full of kids is no small feat, so low-maintenance party food is a must. |
