Simple Birthday Party Cake Recipes
Create a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting. Start with a ½ cup flour, ½ cup sugar, two teaspoons cocoa, ¼ cup melted butter, ½ cup milk (could be skim or 1 percent), one egg and a teaspoon vanilla. Combine your ingredients and whisk thoroughly. Pour it into a greased baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes.
For the buttercream frosting, take ½ cup butter, two tablespoons milk, four cups confectioners' sugar, one teaspoon vanilla extract and ½ cup solid vegetable shortening. Cream the shortening and the butter with an electric mixer. Add the vanilla, sugar and milk and beat again. Whisk until it has a thick consistency.
Picking a Birthday Cake Shape
One of the most creative parts about making a birthday cake is picking a shape and/or theme for your cake. If you're making the cake for a small child, you have many to choose from. Consider cars, sports or animal-shaped baking pans. Kids really enjoy the different shapes that correspond with a theme such as superheroes, cowboys or Disney characters. Most baking supply stores offer a plethora of cake molds so be sure to pick one out before you get in the kitchen.
Birthday Cake Toppers
If you choose to create a traditionally shaped cake in a regular cake pan, you can jazz it up with a cake topper. There are many different toppers to choose from online, as well as in baking goods stores. Most of them are inexpensive and are a no-hassle way of adding a little something special to the birthday cake.
If your child cannot tear himself away from the television when "Bob the Builder" is on, then consider holding a construction-themed birthday party that will let kids play with their hands. |
