Making Kids Birthday Party Invitations

By: Jennifer Maughan

Kids birthday party invitations promise fun and festivities, and offer a first glimpse into the party's theme and the activities to come. Children's birthday party invitations can be as simple or as extensive as you want, but the more creative the invitations for a birthday party, the more excited the guests will be about coming.

Costume Delivery. Keep the invitations basic and splurge on the delivery. Assemble an appropriate costume to go with the theme and hand-deliver the invitations to the eager guests. Getting invited by a fairy, cowgirl, karate master or racecar driver will be a big thrill.

Printables. Save some money on invitations for a birthday party and skip the expensive packets of colorful cartoon characters or lovely princesses. There are many websites with free printable invitations featuring popular characters and a variety of themes, from cowboys to ballerinas. Color them with your children or embellish them with glitter glue, sequins or colored sand.

Puzzling Invitations. Gather colorful pieces of thick cardstock and write the party invitation information on each piece, one per guest. Then, carefully cut the cardstock into approximately 10 to 12 "puzzle pieces." Place the pieces of the invitation to the birthday party in a decorated envelope and deliver to the guest. Not only will the guest receive an awesome invitation, but also they'll have fun figuring it out.

Invisible Ink Invitations. Dip a toothpick into a bowl of about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Write the invitation information on white notebook paper and let it dry for 30 minutes. Decorate an envelope with fun stickers and this message: "This is a secret message for ____________. Hold this paper close to a warm light bulb. Don't touch the light bulb to the paper. As the paper heats up, you'll see the secret message. ADULT SUPERVISION PLEASE." The guest will be amazed to see the invitation information appear before their eyes. These are unique birthday party invitations for a spy party, magic party or fairy party where magic ink can be tied in.

Prop Invitations. Select an inexpensive item that goes along with the party theme, such as a plastic fire hat for a fireman birthday party or a plastic tiara for a princess party. Affix the unique birthday party invitation information to the prop and hand-deliver to the guests. Encourage them to wear the prop to the party for added fun.
