How to Make a Fish Pinata

Here's what you need to learn how to make a fish pinata. A fish pinata is a fun variation on the standard pinata. It's not difficult to make a fish pinata and it is a shape which allows you to be creative with your use of color and decoration. 

First, you need to choose a balloon. You can either find a balloon that's already shaped like a balloon, or you can use a typical round balloon. If you use a standard round balloon, you'll also need to make a tail for your fish by cutting a triangle out of a piece of cardboard. Cut the tip off of the triangle so that you can attach the tail to the fish. Use tape to secure the fish's tail to its body.

Whether you buy a pre-shaped fish balloon or you're constructing your own fish, your next step is to cover your design in strips of paper. You can use either one inch strips of newspaper or plain white computer paper (which is easier to paint). Tear the paper to give it uneven edges and allow it to adhere to the piñata more easily.

Make a papier maché paste using two parts of water to one part water. Mix it together until it has a glue-like consistency. Dip the strips of paper into this paste and place them onto the balloon and tail. Give your piñata at least 24 hours to dry in between layers (of which there should be several, depending on how sturdy you want your piñata to be).

Now you'll pop the balloon by sticking a pin through the fish pinata. Cut a hole in the bottom of the fish, take the balloon out and put candy inside. Tape the piece you cut out back on to the piñata and begin decorating. You can paint your fish or use crepe paper to give your piñata an authentic pinata look. You can either make your fish piñata look like a fish by using greens and browns or you can get playful, using vibrant colors and big, googly eyes. Make sure to give your fish eyes and a mouth!
