Bring a touch of homemade whimsy to your Christmas tree this year, and decorate it with personalized Christmas tree ornaments that kids can make. After they've strung popcorn and dried cranberry garlands, try these ideas.
Candy Cane Reindeer
What You Need: A wrapped candy cane, brown pipe cleaner, small red pompom, googly eyes, ribbon and glue.
Take the candy cane, and wrap the pipe cleaner around the curve, so that the long ends are pointing away from the candy cane. Twist them into antler shapes. Then, glue the googly eyes to the short curved part and glue the pompom just underneath. These are the eyes and nose. Tie a ribbon just above halfway down the long end of the candy cane.
Decorated Glass Balls
What You Need: Solid colored glass ball ornament, glitter glue pen, acrylic paint, cotton swabs.
Hold the ball ornament carefully in one hand, and draw designs with the other, using glitter pen or cotton swabs dipped in paint. Try swirls, polka dots, initials and other designs as desired. Hang to dry.
Salt Dough Ornament
What You Need: ½ cup salt, 1 cup flour, ½ cup water, rolling pin, cookie cutters, acrylic paints in various colors, glitter glue, ribbon.
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix salt, flour and water until a ball of dough is formed. Knead dough until it's at the right consistency for molding, and add a bit of flour if too sticky. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin, to about ¼-inch. Use cookie cutters to make shapes, and place them on a cookie sheet. Use a straw or toothpick to make a small hole at the top for hanging. Bake for 2 hours, remove and cool completely. Paint and decorate the ornaments as desired, and tie a ribbon through the hole for hanging.
Pine Cone Ornament
What You Need: Pine cone, two paper plates, glitter, white school glue, ribbon.
Pour white glue onto one paper plate. Roll the pinecone in the glue so that most of the ends are coated in glue. Holding the pinecone over the second plate, sprinkle glitter all over. Allow the glue to dry completely, and then tie a ribbon to the top of the pinecone. Use different colors of glitter as desired.
