By: Michelle M. Guilbeau-Sheppard

These easy Christmas crafts do not take long to make, and children will enjoy them. Even better, they can brighten up your house without costing a fortune.

Children love to make crafts at the holidays, and any child would be thrilled to add their own special touches to home decorations or gifts. Craft projects help kids get involved with holiday preparation, bring them a feeling of accomplishment and get them in the spirit of giving.

First, go through the house to find potential craft materials. Homemade Christmas crafts can be assembled from items that are found in the home, such as paper and ribbons.

Paper Globe Balls
Materials

  • Construction paper or cardstock in red or green
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Glue

Directions

  1. Cut three strips of paper about one inch wide and about eight inches long. The length will depend on the size of the globe that you and your child desire.
  2. Bend each strip into a circle, and glue the ends together. Place the three circles together to form a globe.
  3. Glue the circles together where the three circles meet at the top and bottom.
  4. Tie a small loop of the string to the top of the paper globe ball. The paper globe ball can be hung by the loop. If desired, the paper globe ball could also be embellished with tinsel or glitter.

Paper globe balls are one of the easiest Christmas crafts to make. Groupings of three, five and seven paper globe balls with varying string lengths look spectacular hanging from the ceiling. Smaller-sized paper globe balls make perfect ornaments for the Christmas tree.

Glitzy Balls
Materials

  • Cellophane straws
  • String
  • Scissors

Directions

  1. Cut eight cellophane straws in half. Place the halves together in a pile, making sure the ends are even.
  2. Tie string around the middle of the straw pile, and pull the string taut.
  3. As the string is pulled taut, the straws will be drawn together and squeezed. The ends of the straws will spread out in various directions. You can also spread them out so they look even.
  4. Hang the glitzy ball by the string, and another one of your Christmas crafts is complete.

Glitzy balls hold up well when they are grouped together in a large bowl or on a platter, so they can make a festive table centerpiece for holiday meals.

Santa Textured Greeting Card
Materials

  • Image of Santa from the Web or a magazine
  • Construction paper or cardstock
  • Cotton balls
  • Felt scraps
  • Any type of found textured items of interest
  • Glitter
  • Glue

Directions

  1. Fold construction paper in half to make a base for the greeting card.
  2. Cut out the image of Santa, and glue it to the front of the construction paper.
  3. Cut out the felt in the same shape as Santa's pants or Santa's jacket, and glue it on. If it is too difficult to cut the same shape, just embellish Santa's image with red felt polka dots. Encourage kids to present their own vision of Santa.
  4. Glue cotton pieces to Santa's beard, hat tassel, cuffs and ankles.
  5. Lightly sprinkle glitter dust, or lightly spray glitter onto the Santa image.

People love to receive homemade Christmas cards, and the recipient of the Santa textured greeting card would be amused by this lovely holiday card.
