Free Christmas Decorations To Make

By: Erin Huffstetler

Free Christmas decorations can be just as festive as expensive store-bought decorations. Learn how to give your home a touch of the red and green without spending any green with these free Christmas decorations to make.

Garland
Create a no-cost garland for your home out of last year's Christmas cards. Just grab any cards that you have stashed away and use a drinking glass to trace a circle around the best part of each image. Then cut out your circles, punch a hole in the top of each one and string them onto a piece of ribbon or string.

Want something a bit more vintage? Dig out your button collection and string your favorites on a bit of twine. Use red and green for a traditional look, or opt for shades of white for a more Victorian look.

Faux presents
Nothing says Christmas like a pile of wrapped packages, so find several large boxes and wrap them in pretty papers and ribbons. Then create a display in your foyer, by your fireplace or atop your dining room table-anywhere that needs a splash of Christmas.

Want to carry the present theme a bit further? Remove several framed pictures from your wall and wrap them as well. To keep things no-cost, recycle wrapping paper and ribbon from last year or create your own gift wrap out things that you have around the house-wrap in paper grocery bags, aluminum foil or your kids' artwork.

Tablescape
Create beautiful table displays or an arrangement for your mantel using a collection of natural objects. Try an arrangement of plain pinecones in a basket or glass vase, or use your craftiness to turn those pinecones into miniature Christmas trees. Just spray several pinecones green and then decorate them with beads, buttons and other findings that you have around the house.

Fresh pine or holly branches also make a simple but festive tablescape. Lay them out on the table for a short-term arrangement, or place them in vases with water for a longer-lasting display.

Holiday mural
Do you often find yourself admiring the winter scenes painted on store windows for the holidays? If so, bring some of that magic home by creating your own mural on one or more of your windows. Just mix a bit of dish liquid in with your acrylic paints, and your paint will brush on easily and wash off just as easily when the season is over. To maximize the fun of this project, get your whole family involved in deciding what should be included in your scene.

Advent calendar
Skip the store-bought advent calendar and go for something a bit more personal. Just look around your house for small boxes or containers until you have 24. Then assemble the collection on a tray or cake plate. Fill each box with a special homemade trinket, or write out little fortunes for each day. Either way your family is sure to love this clever calendar.

Christmas doesn't have to be about money. Bring the holiday home by focusing your decorating efforts around special handcrafted items. Once you see the results, you're sure to agree that free Christmas decorations really are best.
