Christmas Love Poems

By: Cheryl Bowman

When you're writing Christmas love poems, it's good to first decide what format you will use for the poem. You can write the poem in free verse first, then edit it and try to put it in the format you want, or you can leave it in free verse if you decide you like it that way. A Christmas love poem doesn't have to be in any particular format; let the words and your feelings dictate the format.

Christmas Quotes on Love
The following is an example of rhyming free-form poetry by Dr. Seuss. Christmas love poems can be steamy or they can be vague, such as this excerpt from How the Grinch Stole Christmas:

It came without ribbons,
It came without tags,
It came without packages, boxes, or bags.
Christmas can't be bought from a store...
Maybe Christmas means a little bit more.
-Dr.Seuss

This particular poem is a free-form Christmas love poem that does not rhyme:

Come Home For Christmas

Unlock the door of your heart -
Enter the gentleness within.
Open the window of your soul -
Breathe in the season of miracles.
No matter how far you've traveled,
It's time to come home now,
Where Christmas abounds in love.
-Judith A. Lindberg

Tips for Writing Christmas Poems
Christmas love poems not only have a love theme to them, but also make mention of something associated with the Christmas holiday. You don't have to mention the word Christmas, but the poem should invoke some sort of holiday imagery, either a wreath hanging over a fire, lights on the tree or mistletoe placed over a door.

When trying to put a Christmas love poem together, think of the person that means the most to you and how you feel about that person. The holidays are a time for us to take stock of our lives and gather with the people we treasure the most. We feel emotions a little more intensely during Christmas than at other times of the year, making this the perfect season to think about and express your love.

If you want to write a Christmas love poem, but do not want to write it about a person, think of something else that gives you great joy. A love poem can be inspired by pets, someone else's relationship, your own relationship or even a fictional story or character.

Don't get hung up on the form if you find yourself struggling to write. Sit down with some cocoa or egg nog and brainstorm words and phrases that come to mind when you think about the person or thing that you love. Once you've got those words written out, assemble them in different ways until the poem starts to take shape. From there, you can add some holiday images to make the poem complete.
