Humorous Christmas Poems

By: Cheryl Bowman

Humorous Christmas poems can be a hit, if you can get over the natural tendency to write something romantic or wistfully nostalgic. If you are adept at drawing cartoons, you can add a cartoon to your Christmas poem and possibly turn it into a homemade Christmas card. Like any other poem, a humorous Christmas poem may be written in free form or using a form such as a limerick or Haiku.

Free-Form Christmas Poems
This example of a free-form poem, written by William Topaz McGonagall, shows how free form poetry can be used to tell a story:

Mr. Smiggs was a gentleman,
And he lived in London town;
His wife she was a good kind soul,
And seldom known to frown.

'Twas on Christmas eve,
And Smiggs and his wife lay cosy in bed,
When the thought of buying a goose
Came into his head.

Christmas Haiku
There are many subjects that relate to Christmas that you can wrap into a Haiku format: snow, decorating the tree or even something that happened at a previous Christmas dinner. Haikus are simple to write; you simply need to create a poem that has five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second and five syllables in the third and final line.

You may also consider putting humorous Christmas poems in the form of a limerick. This is a five-line poem where the first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other. Most limericks tell a quick story or describe a scene.

If you need some inspiration, start with these humorous Christmas quotes from poems written by famous authors:

At Christmas I no more desire a rose,
Than wish a snow in May's new-fangled shows;
But like of each thing that in season grows.
-William Shakespeare

I'd like a stocking made for a giant,
And a meeting house full of toys,
Then I'd go out in a happy hunt
For the poor little girls and boys;
Up the street and down the street,
And across and over the town,
I'd search and find them everyone,
Before the sun went down
-Eugene Field
