Homemade Christmas Gifts: Easy Floor Pillow for Kids

If you are looking for a homemade Christmas gifts for kids, why not make a quick and easy gift that is sure to be used: a fleece floor pillow. Fleece floor pillows are warm and cozy. They also are the perfect thing for kids to sprawl on while they are watching a favorite movie or trying to beat the high score on a video game.

To make a fleece pillow, you will need:

  • Two to three feet of fleece in a print the child you are making the pillow for will like.
  • Enough batting to stuff the finished pillow
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine and thread that matches the fleece (optional)

While a standard, rectangular-body pillow is useful and comfortable, you may want to make a shaped pillow instead. If you opt for a shaped pillow, just be sure you sketch out an outline of the shape before you begin cutting to avoid making a design that is too complicated to cut out. Cut the pillow shape out of the fleece, being sure to leave a seam allowance of a half inch if you will be sewing it together or an allowance of three inches if you will be using the no-sew method.

Once you have the pillow cut out, it is time to put it together. If you will be sewing it together, put the right sides together and sew around the outside edge of the pillow, leaving a gap of four to five inches unsewn. Turn the pillow right side out, stuff it, and hand sew the gap together.

If you are putting the pillow together the no sew way, you will need to have the right sides facing out and the wrong sides together. Cut a "fringe" the whole way around the edge. Each piece of fringe should be three inches long and an inch wide. When you are done cutting the fringe, you are ready to secure the pillow. Simply knot the top and bottom fringe pieces together piece by piece. When the fringe is almost all knotted, stuff your pillow. Then finish knotting the fringe. You've created a useful and fun Christmas gift for the child in your life and you didn't even have to thread a needle.

If you have created a character pillow, you have one final step: adding details. Hot glue guns really come in handy here. For a Christmas tree shaped pillow, I hot glued felt balls and rickrack to one side. Use your imagination to help your pillow come to life.
