Make Your Own Christmas Party Invitations

By: Belinda J Mooney

You can make your own party stand out with homemade Christmas party invitations. A bright and cheery handmade invitation is also the perfect way to set the tone for a themed Christmas party, and you don't even need to be an artist to make beautiful invites. Here are some creative ideas to get you started:

Pick Your Christmas Theme
Your theme might be a winter wonderland with snowmen, Christmas trees or presents. Whatever you choose, start by choosing shapes and colors that suit the theme. If your party's theme is winter or snow, a snowman makes a cute invitation shape. Christmas balls, stockings, stars and presents are all good choices for shapes, as long as they fit in the cards you choose. Next, find a template or draw your own and cut your invitations out of card stock or colored paper. These invitations can be one-sided with the info written on the back, or you can fold them like a traditional card.

Embellish It
Next, add sparkle to your Christmas party invitation. If your invitation is in the shape of a Christmas tree or has a Christmas tree on the front, add a few sequins for balls, a tiny glitter ribbon or a small star sticker at the top. If your invitation is decorated like a present, add a little ribbon bow on top. A little glitz goes a long way on these. If you are not using a shaped invitation, then now is when you decorate the front to fit your theme. Cut snowmen out of felt and ornaments from shiny gift wrap, or simply use premade stickers.

Be careful that you don't overdo it. Very few things are more annoying for a party guest than to open an invitation and have glitter spill out all over the floor. Also glue the decorations well so they don't come off in shipping. Most important, keep the decorations light because you don't want the card to weigh more than standard postage.

Include Your Information
Be sure to include all the pertinent information in your invitation, including date, time, place and directions if necessary. Use colored pens and pencils to brighten the invitation. Gold or silver markers add an extra special holiday sparkle to Christmas party invitations. If you don't feel comfortable writing them by hand, then print out your information and paste it to the inside of the card. Your guests will be sure to put your party on their calendar with a fun invitation!
