How to Make a Christmas Wreath

By: Katelyn Thomas

Want to learn how to make a Christmas wreath? Handmade wreaths are easy to make, but they make a very impressive gift. While you can spend quite a bit of money buying supplies for your wreath, you can also make one very cheaply with things you find around the yard or in the woods.

To make a nature wreath, you will need a grapevine wreath form, small pinecones, ribbon in holiday colors and a hot glue gun. You may also want to add acorns, dried flowers or silk poinsettia flower to the wreath.

Directions

  1. Buy or make a 12- to 14-inch grapevine wreath. They are very easy to make if you have wild grapevines growing in your side yard. Simply cut a 6- to 8-footsection of grapevine, strip off any leaves, and begin tucking one end into a 12-inch circle. Twine the loose end in and out of the circle until you use up the entire length. You can wire the two loose ends to the wreath for added security, but mine stay in place just by tucking them in.
  2. Begin applying the pinecones to the wreath with hot glue. I placed them directly beside each other the whole way around the wreath. The grapevine was completely covered by pinecones. However, if you aren't concerned about having the wreath last through several seasons, you could just glue several pinecones on the wreath and then tuck evergreen or holly leaves into the grapevine as well.
  3. Wrap the ribbon around your wreath and tuck the ends to the back. Hot glue the ribbon ends down.
  4. Make an attractive bow. A bow maker really helps with this. If you don't have one, just make 3 to 4 8- inch loops of ribbon stacked on top of each other, leaving a foot of ribbon loose on each end. Then wrap a piece of wire around the center of the loops. Cut the ribbon ends on an angle so they look attractive. Hot glue or wire the bow to the top of the wreath. I personally like to glue a few dried flowers or silk poinsettia flowers to the wreath, but it looks wonderful plain as well.

I like to make a half dozen or so nature wreaths and give them as early Christmas gifts, so they can be used to decorate the recipients' front doors for the holidays.
