Great Get Well Gift Ideas

get well gifts

While most people think to send a get well card, or even balloons or flowers, there are many get well gift ideas that can lift the spirits of a sick or injured friend or family member. By thinking beyond the local florist, you can present some truly wonderful and helpful get well soon gifts that will be really appreciated.

Minor Illness: If the person is suffering from a minor illness, many gifts can speed them toward recovery. Give a gift of comfort with a new mug and several herbal tea packets tucked inside. A plate of cookies or a new paperback book will help the recipient pass the time while they recover. You could even bring over a thermos of hot homemade soup with oyster crackers. Make them smile with thoughtful and funny gifts, such as a box of chocolate band-aids or a bottle of candy coated “pills” (mints or candies).

Hospital Stay: With so many people having minor surgery, you can easily find get well soon gifts that will make their stay more comfortable. Give them some warm fuzzy new socks or slippers to help them avoid the cold hospital floor. A gift basket containing crossword puzzles, small jigsaw puzzles, a deck of cards, a few magazines and a new book will keep the hospitalized person occupied. Because they’ll likely have dietary restrictions during a hospital stay, avoid giving any get well soon gifts of food unless you are sure it is specifically allowed.

Serious Illness or Injury: When someone is suffering from a serious illness, such as cancer, or recovering from a serious injury, the types of get well soon gifts should find a balance between being upbeat but not frivolous. There are many small plaques, figurines and stuffed animals that include a thoughtful message of courage, faith and hope. A CD of relaxing music or a DVD of a favorite movie are always appreciated. New pajamas or a bathrobe may be appropriate if you are close to the recipient. Choose a religious item if you know it would bring the person comfort, such as an angel pin or an audio collection of Bible stories.
