Intro to Texting and How to Text Message

By: Jennifer Maughan

Get acquainted with texting basics and learn how to text message others if you are interested in joining the popular trend of texting friends and family members. Text messaging, texting or SMS (short messaging service) messaging is the newest form of interpersonal communication. It is instantaneous, quick and less intrusive than many other methods of keeping in touch.

The Purpose of Text Messaging
Text messaging is a convenient way to keep in touch with friends and family where you normally wouldn't have time to invest in a phone conversation. It's perfect for asking quick questions, letting someone know of a change of plans, sending loving thoughts and keeping tabs on teenagers.

How Texting Works
Text messaging products consist of an electronic device that displays a small screen that can send and receive written messages from other devices. It's a blend between a short portable e-mail and a phone call. Using a keypad, users type out messages, generally up to 160 characters, and then send them to others with mobile units. Advocates consider texting to be discreet and a great way to keep in touch with friends and family throughout the day.

Text messages are set to the recipient's cell phone number, where the messages are transmitted and received almost instantly. Most devices also feature a confirmation that the message was delivered to the recipient. Various carriers offer payment plans, from a few cents per text to a flat fee that allows for so many texts per month.

Sending a Text
To learn how to text message, go to the menu on your mobile phone. Navigate to the messages section of the menu, and confirm your selection. Select the option for NEW TEXT MESSAGES. Enter in the number of the recipient (this must be a mobile number, not a land line). Confirm the number by selecting OK or ENTER.

Note that each key on the keypad has three letters. By clicking a button one, two or three times, you can rotate through the letters assigned to that key. If you want to find the letter "E," you will need to hit the number 3 button two times. Some devices have little keypads that you can use, like a computer keyboard. Type out your message, then press SEND. You will get a confirmation that the message was sent.
