Learning how to say thank you to your boss might be easier than you think. Any manager would be appreciative if her employees did their jobs with little supervision, freeing her for more pressing matters. But if you're already an exemplary employee, you may want to come up with a few new ideas.
Giving Gifts
Usually it's the boss who gives baseball or basketball tickets to the employees. It might be a nice change of pace for the boss to receive tickets or a gift certificate from an employee instead. If you're giving tickets, make sure it's an event the boss will be free to attend and also an event he would want to attend. If not, he may be forced to give the tickets away or toss them.
If the thank you gift you have selected is a gift certificate, put a little thought into it. For instance, a gift certificate to the coffee shop your boss frequents is ideal. Gift cards for the car wash will never be ignored, and a gift certificate to the flower shop might come in handy when she's been working late a few days too often and needs to make peace with her husband.
Employees are often hesitant about giving any kind of gift. Often employees feel a gift they could afford would be too cheap or not sophisticated enough. This means that more employees choose a nondescript gift card over a personal gift. In reality, however, few bosses are so rich that they don't appreciate kindness offered by dedicated employees. If you want to get a gift instead of a gift card, go for it.
Saying Thank You
If your boss allows you to skip out late on occasion or is always buying goodies for the office staff, it would be nice if you reciprocated once in a while. One way to get the message that you appreciate him across is to grab a few business thank-you cards and keep them on hand for those moments when you just need to say something.
Giving From the Heart
Sometimes giving from the heart simply means something homemade. Think about making a basket of goodies for the office. Few managers will turn down a plate of homemade brownies or a loaf of zucchini bread.
Check out the calendar. Is there an upcoming morning when the boss will be stuck in a meeting or in his office? If so, a nice way to say thank you to the boss for all she has done is to bring in a basket filled with homemade cinnamon rolls, cookies, or muffins. If your boss likes toast and jam, fill a large basket with a loaf of homemade bread, a tub of margarine or butter, a slicing knife and a small jar of homemade strawberry jam. If there isn't a toaster in the office kitchen, enlarge the basket and add a toaster. Wrap a ribbon around the basket and drop in a business thank-you card with a handwritten note that includes your name, so your boss can put a face to the gift.
Your boss will appreciate the fact that you took the time to show that you appreciate what he has done for you. That will go a long way in building your boss/employee relationship.
