Making Creative Halloween Candy Bags

By: Jennifer Maughan

Choose to make Halloween candy bags that are different from anyone else's. Choose to complement a costume or come up with a crafty keepsake for your kids' Halloween bags.

No sew Halloween bag. Select a pillowcase in a light color, such as white or yellow. Purchase glow-in-the-dark fabric paint, glitter fabric paint and Halloween iron-on decals. Let children choose where the decals will go on the bag, then let them decorate the fabric with the paint. Let the bags dry for 24 hours before using.

Simple sew Halloween bag. Purchase two pieces of felt that are large enough to hold candy, such as two 20 x 20-inch pieces. Also pick up some ribbon in a complementary color. Cut the ribbon into two 10-inch pieces. Sew both ends of one ribbon to the top of one side of felt, creating a looped handle. Repeat with the other piece of ribbon and felt. These are the bag's handles. Pin the two pieces together with the handles inside, then sew up three sides of the bag, leaving the top open. Place iron-ons on the outside or decorate with sequins, beads and fake jewels for a one-of-a-kind Halloween candy bag.

Paper Halloween bag. Find a brown paper bag with handles from a local store. Select Halloween printables, stickers and other decorations and let children glue them on the bag. Use glitter, markers, ribbon, fake spiders, felt cutouts or any other decorating material desired to make a sensational Halloween candy bag.

Halloween bag as a prop. If the child's costume allows for it, use a prop for a candy bag. A princess can use a flowery basket for a Halloween bag while a jailbird can use a pillowcase with a dollar sign painted on it and a girl dressed as Dora can use her purple Backpack for a Halloween bag. Decorate a plain bag to go with a costume, such as a bag covered with feathers for a bird costume. Let a boy dressed as a werewolf enhance a plain pillowcase with fake blood for his Halloween bag while a wizard's costume is perfectly complimented by a bag with iron-on shiny stars and moons.
