Homemade Halloween Costumes

By: Aysha Schurman

The key to creating homemade Halloween costumes is to keep things simple and raid your closet. There are tons of great costumes hiding on your linen shelves or in your dresser drawers. If there are children in the house, all the better. Children's toys and plastic knick knacks are perfect items to use for great costumes.

Milk Carton
Find some cardboard, scissors, glue and paint to create a milk carton big enough to fit on your head. Cut a circle out of the carton on one side, big enough to stick your face through. Paint the carton white and spell out the word "Missing" above your head. Decorate the rest of the milk carton and your costume is done.

Ancient Roman
Another great costume that uses just a sheet is a stand-by in most frat houses: the toga. Take an old sheet and wrap it around your torso. Pull one end up and drape it over your shoulder.

Either tie or pin the other end of the draped sheet to the torso wrapping to secure. Use some fake leaves or green paper to create a leafy crown. Throw on some sandals with straps and the look is complete.

Gypsy
As long as you have some flowing scarves and tons of jewelry, you can dress up as a gypsy. Women need a flowing skirt, or skirts, and a peasant-looking blouse. Wrap a scarf around your waist and another around your head. Load up on the bracelets and make sure to wear some big earrings.

Men need some baggy, plain cloth pants. Use some sort of peasant-looking shirt or just a decorated vest. Grab a scarf to go around your waist and another to go around your head. If you have a real, or toy, musical instrument handy, make sure to use it as the perfect accessory.

Witch/Warlock
If you don't mind spending a few dollars, there are many Halloween masks and wigs that can help finish off a homemade costume. Use a black dress and a witch mask for a quick witch costume.

Use dark clothes and maybe a robe, as well as a wizard/warlock mask, for a quick warlock costume. If you want to go all out as a witch or warlock, look for Halloween wigs with ratty hair and/or a pointy hat.
