Unique Halloween Costumes for Girls

By: Jennifer Maughan

Your little girl will love the attention that her one-of-a-kind, unique Halloween costume gets and she's sure to stand out in a crowd.

Sugar Plum Fairy. She can be a princess, ballerina and fairy all at once. Start with pink tights, ballet shoes and a pink netting tutu, and hot glue hard candies in different colors and shapes to the tutu. Make a cardboard crown covered with the hard candies and create a ribboned fairy wand. Fairy wings, sparkling makeup and jewelry finish the outfit.

Tropical Cutie. Find a straw or Styrofoam wreath that comfortably sits on the child's head. Glue plastic fruit into a pyramid on top of the wreath. A simple peasant top paired with a gypsy-like wrap skirt in bright colors completes the dress. Add sparkles or embellishments as desired, and finish the costume with red dancing shoes, red lipstick and bright red maracas. Large gold earrings are an extra plus if her ears are pierced.

Mother Nature/Earth Fairy. Show she's in tune with nature by covering a floor-length skirt with silk plants, leaves and flowers. Use small twigs and craft store moss as well. A green turtleneck can be embellished with additional silk flowers and leaves. For the hat, get a bird nest and bird from the craft store and hot glue it onto a cloth headband, then add flowers and leaves. For a fairy, add wings and a wand to finish the outfit.

Mouse Loves Cheese. Take a cardboard box and paint it to look like yellow cheese. Cut a hole in the top so that the box fits loosely at the child's chest or waist. The child should wear a gray sweatshirt or turtleneck and gray mouse ears, with whiskers and other mousy details included. Attach two strips of gray fabric as suspenders to keep the "cheese" in place. Yellow tights and shoes complete the look of the little mouse nibbling on the block of cheese.

Snake Lady. Deadly beautiful with locks of writhing snakes, this Medusa costume is sure to please. Gather lightweight rubber snakes and use heavy thread to attach them to a cloth headband. Have enough snakes in different sizes and lengths to cover most of your little girl's hair. Use a long tattered dress with snake-themed embellishments and accessories. Use green face paint to make a reptilian look for the face, with a bright red mouth and plastic fangs.
