Creative Pet Costume Ideas

Are you looking for pet costume ideas for your furry friend to wear this Halloween? Pet costumes are becoming more and more popular, as are costume parades and contests for you and your pets to show off. You can purchase a costume for pets, or you can put together your own. Here are some simple pet costume ideas to get you started.

Flower Child
Combine a tie-dyed doggie t-shirt with a crown of flowers, and your pooch with will be spreading the peace and love at your next party. You can find a tie-dye kit at your local craft store; just make sure the shirt you dye is either cotton or a cotton blend, or the dye won't take. You can also paint a peace symbol onto the back with fabric paints. Next, make a daisy chain by hot gluing faux daisies from the craft store onto a length of ribbon. Tie the finished headband around your dog's head or neck.

Wizard
With a little simple sewing using star-printed fabric from your craft store, you can transform your cat or dog into a magical wizard. Cover a pointed, paper party hat in white craft glue, then carefully cover it with some of the fabric, smoothing out any wrinkles. When the glue is dry, trim off any excess fabric. To make a wizard's cape, cut a rectangle of fabric the length of your pet's body. Fold the bottom and side edges over one half inch and stitch. Gather the top edge slightly, and sew it along a length of ribbon, leaving enough ribbon dangling on either side to be able to tie it around your pet's neck.

Cheerleader
You can turn a purchased doggie sweater into a cute cheerleader outfit by adding an easy-to-make skirt and little pom poms. Choose some fabric to match your dog's sweater. Measure around your pooch's middle, and cut a strip of wide elastic band to fit. Cut a piece of fabric twice as wide as the length of elastic, and slightly longer than you wish the skirt to be. Fold the bottom edge up one half inch and stitch. Next, gather the top edge and stitch it to the length of elastic. Stitch the skirt together at the back. Make two little pom poms out of yarn or ribbon, and tie them around your puppy's ankles on her front legs.
