4th of July crafts for kids can help keep your little ones occupied while you prepare for your cookout. Children can spend a few hours the day before the bash putting together some festive decorations that you can arrange throughout the house. For some basic craft staples, pick up colorful construction paper, streamers, patriotic stickers, glue, scissors and some Popsicle sticks.
Flags
4th of July ideas for crafts always start with flags. You can make two different American flag crafts. Start out with the construction paper flags. You'll need construction paper in red, white and blue. Use a white piece as your base. Then cut out long strips of red construction paper to act as the red strips. You can glue these onto the white base piece. Then cut out a blue square and place in the left hand corner of your flag. Then with your patriotic star stickers, place several in the blue rectangle. Let it dry for about 10 to 15 minutes before hanging up.
The second flag is made with Popsicle sticks. These are super cute and small so the kids can walk around with them during the party. You can either make your own miniature flag using construction paper similar to the craft mentioned above. Your other option is to purchase miniature pre-made flags. Then take the small flag, and glue it to the top of the Popsicle stick. These are perfect for sticking in a vase with white carnations for a centerpiece as well.
Star Banner
Take about 10 to 20 cut-out construction paper stars and one thick, long, sturdy string that will act as the base for your banner. If your stars are solid colors, leave some that way and decorate others with stickers or glitter. Then arrange them next to one another and either hot glue them to the string or staple them on to secure them in their place. If you do use glue, give it 20 minutes or so to settle before hanging it up outside or in the house.
4th of July Activities
There are many games and activities found on the Web or in books found at your local library. You can print out several copies of different games and then staple them together in a 4th of July activities handbook. You can include 4th of July-type scavenger hunts, word jumbles or patriotic crossword puzzles. In the corner of the booklet attach red, white and blue ribbon. You can also elect to make a cover from construction paper, stickers and glitter. Just leave that creativity aspect up to the kids.
