Fourth of July Crafts for the Whole Family

By: Kristen Oliveri

It's fun to make Fourth of July crafts with your entire family. You can get the kids and your husband or wife involved in the festivities, and you will be able to spend time with one another assembling crafts before the craziness of the big day comes. So pick up some craft supplies, turn on some patriotic-themed music and spend an afternoon with the whole family making some crafts.

Flower Centerpiece
The parents will start with picking a clear or red vase and then flowers that go with the red, white and blue theme. Carnations or hydrangeas work in plain white and/or red. The kids will put together the other piece of the craft: homemade American flags. They can either glue on miniature American flags to Popsicle sticks or sturdy red plastic straws. Stick them in the vase around the flowers for a colorful centerpiece. You can also tie a red, blue or white bow around the top of the vase for some extra flair.

Genealogy Chart
Have you ever wondered how you wound up here in the United States after all? A fun activity you could do with your family is research where your family came from and the particular family member who brought you into the US. The adults can tackle the tough research angle and can present their kids with fun facts and pictures. Give the children an assortment of stickers, glue sticks, construction paper and ribbons. They can mount the pictures onto construction paper to create a family tree scrapbook. Encourage them to add different strings or designs to the scrapbook. When it's finished, you can put it on display for guests to check out during the Fourth of July festivities.

Use these Fourth of July activities as a learning opportunity, especially in the case of the genealogy chart, and as a chance to spend time together. You can make the most of a holiday and teach your kids about the importance of nation, community and family.
