Patriotic Craft Ideas

By: Belinda J Mooney

These patriotic craft ideas can serve as a reminder of the sacrifice of the men and women who are responsible for the rights and liberties we enjoy today. All too often, people let these holidays pass by without even reflecting on what the celebration is truly about. So why not celebrate those holidays, such as Memorial Day or the 4th of July, with some fun red, white and blue crafts?

Patriotic Paper Chains
Kids can make paper chains out of red, white and blue construction paper and drape them over doorways and mantels. Depending on the weather, they can also drape these strings on the front porch or the mailbox, which will remind your neighbors of the occasion. These crafts are simple to make and require only a few craft supplies, so even the youngest kids can get involved.

Keychains for the Kids
It is a good idea to encourage patriotism when kids are young. Giving patriotic key chains to your kids serves as an everyday reminder for them to love their country. Red, white and blue painted sea shells and small papier-mâché eagles dangling from their bags are cool, yet meaningful decorations. You can buy keychain rings at your local craft stores and let your kids choose what to add to them.

Hand-Painted Paperweights
Find smooth, fist-sized stones. Wash them, and let them dry. Paint them, or, if you have the appropriate tools, engrave short patriotic sayings into them. Paint a flag on yours, or go with red, white and blue stripes. Spray paint the stones with shellac to seal and waterproof the paperweight. You can give these away to your family, relatives and friends.

Windsocks and Pinwheels
If the wind is great, don't let it go to waste. Construct these wind-aided objects, and hang them around your house. These are easy, fun and attractive. Your house will certainly turn heads on that special day. You can find directions for making all types of windsocks online by doing a simple search for directions.

Some kids may be pen pals with soldiers. Even if your child can't send these crafts straight to the troops, take plenty of pictures of your child's crafts, and you can send them to his pen pal. Soldiers who are currently fighting will know that people are thinking of them and appreciate their efforts.
