Tips for Making Fireworks Displays

By: Caroline Roberts

Making your own fireworks displays can be fun, and you don't have to drive anywhere for the spectacle. The only catch is that you must keep firework safety in mind from start to finish. These tips can help guide you through the process of designing a display:

Find Out If You Can Have a Fireworks Display in the First Place: Contact your local police department, and ask first.

Talk to Your Neighbors: Not all neighbors like the noise. If a neighbor balks, try inviting him to the party, and then you can have your display.

No M-80s or Cherry Bombs: These fireworks are illegal, and you are at a greater risk of hurting yourself.

Buy From a Reliable Source: Unfortunately, illegal fireworks are common. The American Pyrotechnics Association advises that you look for a manufacturer's name and safety label.

Give Yourself Enough Space: The amount of space should apply horizontally and vertically. You should also plan to launch your fireworks from level ground, preferably from a hard surface, and you want to set them off facing away from the crowd.

Hold a Dress Rehearsal: For truly fantastic fireworks, test the timing and how long it takes you to move from one firework to the next. That way, you won't become flustered or distracted during the real event.

Stay Aware of Kids at All Times: Children shouldn't be anywhere near fireworks. Period.

Use a Long Lighter: You want to keep as much distance between yourself and the firework as possible.

Don't Rush It: Take the time to set off each firework carefully. If you have to make the audience wait in between special effects, so be it. Rushing might cause you to be lax about safety.

Do Not Try to Re-Light Duds: If a firework doesn't go off, simply wait about 20 minutes and place it in a deep bucket of water so it doesn't go off as an unwanted surprise.

No Making Your Own Fireworks: Note that you can arrange a fireworks display. Making your own fireworks is a job best left to the pros.
