How to Celebrate Armed Forces Day

By: Rachel Mork

If you're wondering how to celebrate Armed Forces Day, you'll be delighted to learn there are many planned activities you can attend as you honor those who fight for the United States. Armed Forces Day takes place on the third Saturday in May of each year as a way to encourage civilians to honor those who serve in the US military.

This holiday was established in 1950, combining Air Force Day, Army Day and Navy Day into one holiday. It differs from Memorial Day, which was established to honor the lives of those who died while serving the US military. Armed Forces day is a celebratory event, honoring those who currently serve the armed forces of our country.

You have several options for honoring the active duty military:

Attend A Parade Or Celebration
Check out your local paper for a parade or celebration hosted by your local branch of the military. You may be able to tour a branch of the US military and learn about current technology and training used by that branch.

Send A Soldier A Care Package
Put together a care package for a soldier. Go to anysoldier.com or uso.org to find out what you should donate, how to put together a care package and where to mail the package. Use this opportunity to teach children to honor those risking their lives for the security of our country as you show your appreciation.

Host A Party For A Soldier On Leave
If you want to celebrate the United States armed forces in an even more personal way, you could contact your local military branch to see if you can honor a local soldier with a party. Offer to bring party supplies on base or invite a soldier to your home for Armed Forces Day.

Study Up On The History Of The Military
Take the day to read up on military history or to see a movie centered upon a military theme. By educating yourself and your family about the value of our armed forces, you are honoring those who choose to defend and protect our country.
