Celebrating Beltane in Ireland and Scotland

By: Tammy Cordani

Since the 10th century, people in Ireland and Scotland have celebrated the Gaelic custom of Beltane. This tradition usually takes place near the beginning of May and celebrates Ireland's first day of summer as well as the new growing and crop seasons.

Beltane is known for its lucky fires. In ancient times the citizens would run their cattle through the fires in order to purify them; an act that is no longer part of the celebration. Decorations, such as egg shells and flowers, were placed on bushes and trees in the vicinity. The event was also marked with singing and dancing.

Although the fanfare for Beltane may have waned in recent years, an enormous celebration is held each year at the end of April on Calton Hill in Scotland. The event, which draws thousands of people, is one of Edinburgh's largest celebrations.

Anyone planning to make a trip to Ireland or Scotland will want to make plans to attend a Beltane celebration. A spectator not only has fun watching the event but will develop a greater appreciation for this unique tradition.
