If your mom is a big reader, then this handmade Mother's Day gift idea is sure to be a hit. A simple custom bookmark becomes a cherished keepsake when it is personalized with photos of Mom's little angels. To make this bookmark, you will need an eight-inch-long piece of pretty ribbon that is about two inches wide, a piece of printable fabric, double-sided fusible interfacing, an iron, a hole punch, an eyelet and eyelet setter and a tassle or narrow ribbon that matches the ribbon.
You'll need to begin by selecting a few nice digital photos. I used a separate photo of each child instead of a group shot, because the printed photo size is really too small for a group shot. Arrange the photos so that they line up under each other in a rectangle that is no bigger than one and a half inches wide and seven and a half inches long. If you only are using one or two photos, you can type something between the pictures too.
If you really want to print text or images on fabric, but you don't have the special fabric paper to do so, you can give printing on regular fabric a try. However, regular fabric doesn't always make crisp, clear images. The fabric needs to be smooth, but not shiny. To print on regular fabric, cut a piece of muslin into an 8 1/2 x 11 inch rectangle and glue it to a sheet of regular paper with repositionable adhesive. Now it should print just fine. Just be careful you don't have frayed edges. You don't want to jam up your printer.
Once you are satisfied with your photo layout, it is time to print the photos on to the printable fabric. Let the printed page sit for a few seconds to be sure you don't smear anything while you are handling it. You may want to heat set the ink with an iron just to be sure the images don't smear. Note that this technique will only work with inkjet printers.,
Next, cut out the strip of images, being sure to cut as evenly as possible. Position the double-sided fusible interfacing on the back of the strip. The interfacing has temporary adhesive on it, which will hold it in place so you can carefully place the strip onto your ribbon. The strip should be positioned so that it is face up and in the center of the ribbon. Now it is time to make sure the pieces stay together. Place a clean pressing cloth over your bookmark and follow the directions on the fusible interfacing to melt the layers together. If you do not have fusible interfacing, you can hot glue the layers together, but it may look a bit lumpy.
Finally, punch a hole in the ribbon right above the photo strip and set the eyelet in place. Thread the tassle or narrow ribbon through the eyelet and your handmade Mother's Day gift is ready to go. For a finishing touch, tuck it into a book Mom has been wanting to buy.
