Trachten
The German word "Trachten" describes the entire ensemble that a peasant or rural woman wears in the German region of Bavaria. At one time, this type of clothing was considered suitable for only farm women or servants, but, in the late 1800s, German men and women began to embrace their heritage, including classic clothing. Today, many women wear traditional Bavarian clothing to national and local festivals and heritage events such as Oktoberfest.
The Dirndl
A woman's Oktoberfest costume starts with the dress. Known as the "dirndl," the dress includes a wide skirt and tight bodice. The dress can be just about any color, although vibrant blue, red and gold is popular. The dirndl is usually embroidered with traditional Bavarian floral patterns, and braiding, piping and beadwork can also embellish the traditional dress.
Under the bodice, Bavarian women wear a loose peasant shirt that is generally white and features embroidery as well. The bodice and shirt are usually low cut at the bust, allowing some cleavage to show. Some women wear the blouse off the shoulder for a sexier look, and they fluff up the skirt with frilly petticoats. While traditional dirndls hang down past the knees on Oktoberfest costumes, modern variations of the dress come in mini-skirt length as well.
Accessories
All women's Oktoberfest costumes should include an apron. Whether simple and white or elaborately decorated, the apron is one of the more important elements of the traditional Bavarian woman's costume. Another accessory that will add the finishing touch to the costume is a velvet ribbon choker. Many of these come with little charms attached at the front, including the edelweiss or a German eagle.
Shoes and stockings are not as specific, so go with what blends in. White or tan stockings with brown or black leather lace-up shoes will add authenticity to Oktoberfest costumes, whether or not they are entirely accurate. Many women wear curled ribbons or flowers in their hair when attending Oktoberfest, which makes a lovely accessory as well.
