Unique New Year's Eve Party Ideas

By: Alexandra Heep

If you are tired of the same old New Year's Eve parties or find yourself a little light in the wallet, there is no need to forget celebrations altogether. Instead, liven up the holiday with unique New Year's Eve party ideas.

Memory-making party. If you have a whole day to spend with friends and need an inexpensive, fun way to pass the time, turn New Year's Eve into a memory-making event. Take pictures, upload them, print them out, and create a New Year's Eve album. Everyone can participate and write friendship messages and contribute photos of each other. To expand on the memory theme, everyone can bring a favorite comfort food and tell why it relates to good memories. What better way to celebrate the old and bring in the new?

Family-friendly party. For families with children who want to stay up, it can be challenging to create an appropriate atmosphere for all. You cater to the children with some fun foods and games that even adults can enjoy. Assume Bingo is just for seniors? Think again. To keep everyone entertained while waiting for the ball to drop, play picture Bingo. Anyone old enough to match up pictures can play. The game is available online; you can even get Bingo cards with a New Year's theme. Since you print out cards at your convenience, this will be an instant hit.

For the New Year's Eve menu, you can make fun foods like pancakes or waffles and decorate them creatively with syrup. Draw hearts, spell out messages of prosperity for the year to come, or decorate the foods with the numbers of the New Year. At the stroke of midnight, observe a Spanish good-luck custom by eating 12 grapes, one for each month of the year. Serve them up in champagne flutes for an extra festive touch.

Light on the wallet party. Re-using items for decorations, giving homemade party favors, and hosting a potluck-style celebration can turn a low-cost party into a highly fun event.

Create New Year's Eve party decorations by making streamers out of shiny holiday paper. Simply cut circles out of cardboard and glue the paper on them. Use a hole-punch to create holes in the circles and connect them with jump rings. Utilize the "confetti" from the hole-punch by sprinkling it over an elegant cake platter. Arrange noisemakers on top for a festive and functional centerpiece.

For party favors, why not give edibles that also bring good luck? If black-eyed peas aren't your thing, you can give lentils, which are a symbol of prosperity in Italy for New Year's. Fill a pretty glass jar (with lid) with dried lentils or black-eyed peas, add a bundle of dried herbs, and include the recipe for how to turn these into a satisfying soup.

Since you'll be making edible party favors, have everyone bring a homemade dish for the party menu. To make it more fun, have everyone vote (taste-test required) for the best dish. Hand out prizes after midnight for the best appetizer, entree, and dessert. This party won't cost much, and no one will leave early!
