Ideas for New Year's Day Celebrations

By: Alice Langholt

New Year's Day celebrations are traditionally held either New Year's Eve or the next morning. A typical New Year's party includes staying up past midnight to toast the new year at the exact moment it begins with family and friends. Parties on New Year's Day typically happen either late morning for brunch (otherwise known as a "Hangover Party"), or in the afternoon for the football game. New Year's Eve parties can involve lots of people, a few selected friends, or just the two of you. It's up to you and it all depends on the kind of party you're looking for.

Here are some ideas to ponder when planning how you will ring in the New Year.

An intimate evening
Romance is the word for this sweet celebration. Think Valentine's Day and you'll get the idea. Both members of the couple can plan romantic surprises for the other to unveil during the evening or at midnight. Think of a candlelit dinner, sparkling wine, decadent desserts, dim lights, fireside snuggling, and quiet music, and you'll get the picture. Add surprises with balloons containing chocolate kisses for popping at midnight, a midnight walk outside together while snowflakes are falling (if that's the weather for you), presenting each other with love letters to open the following year, or small gifts that remind you of special times you've had together.

A small gathering
Perhaps you want some company but not too many people - an intimate gathering - for sharing New Year's Eve. Plan a nice dinner, and have your guests bring something to share - suggestions are appetizers, dessert or champagne. Consider a fondue party because it takes a while, is fun, and takes a while. During the long, casual dinner, lots of fun conversation can be had. Before you know it, dessert time has ended and it's almost midnight. Play an interactive game after dinner, such as Apples to Apples, or sing karaoke. Then toast the New Year together. This makes a memorable evening.

A big brouhaha
Ring in the year with a bang by inviting a large gathering! Potluck it for dinner to save money, and the food will be great because everyone will do their best for their one dish. Keep the wine flowing, the evening lighthearted, and provide conversation opportunities. a lively party, karaoke and dancing; for subdued, quiet conversation and Classical music. You decide.

Hangover brunch
Invite friends for a brunch on New Year's Day. Make it an open house so people can come when they're ready and offer brunch foods that are easy on the stomach in case of over indulgence last night. It's a friendly and casual way to start the year.
