When people are at a party and don't know each other, the party can start too slowly, but fun icebreakers can get people talking to each other immediately.
Some ice breaker games have prizes, and others just have the goal of getting people to talk to each other about interesting topics. Here are a few examples to try at your next party:
Scavenger Hunt. Divide the guests into small groups. Then call out an object. The first group to produce the object wins a point. The group with the most points at the end of the game wins a prize. Here are some object examples: A family picture, a postage stamp, two people with the same color socks, or two people born in the same month.
Six Degrees. You'll need a sheet of paper for this one. Have each person draw a graph of how they think the people at the party are related to the host or hostess. Are they coworkers? Relatives? College friends? Encourage guests to guess, and compare all the graphs. Show guests a graph of the real set of relationships, and whoever is closest wins.
Party Bingo. Prepare a grid for each guest with characteristics of each guest filled in. Each guest gets a grid, and a pencil. They have to collect the initials of someone who matches the description in each square. Examples for the squares could include: the person with the most grandchildren/children, the person with the most pets, the person who has been in his or her job the longest, someone who has parachuted or bungee-jumped, someone with blue eyes, an opera fan or the guest with the longest hair. Tailor the list to the guests as much as you can. Whoever fills in the most spaces gets a prize.
You may also want to adapt these icebreakers for a gathering of all your single friends or use six degrees as a way to get someone talking on a first date.
