Set the Mood With the Right Party Lighting

By: Jennifer Maughan

Light can transform the mood of a party, from the soft glow of candles to the whimsical twinkling of hundreds of lights strung through the treetops. With the right party lighting, your guests can see each other and what they're eating while still feeling comfortable and relaxed in a subdued setting. Whether it's an outdoor or an indoor party, lighting can give the party space a personality all its own.

The easiest way to transform the lighting at a party is to use color. For already existing lighting, try changing out the light bulbs to something more festive. Put a soft rose light bulb into a corner lamp for a cheery glow, or substitute outdoor lights with red and blue bulbs for an exciting boost. Lit candles inside colored glass votives can scatter pockets of light throughout a room and provide instant sparkle.

Use lighting to highlight key focal points at the party. Consider using luminaries to light up the walkway to the house, whether you use a simple sand-weighted paper bag and candle or ornate glass and wrought iron varieties. Try mini directional spotlights to highlight the wall behind the outdoor buffet table or to cast stunning shadows on the side of the house.

Create evening magic by using paper lanterns for diffused lighting with an exotic feel. Whether you use vibrant colors or soft rice paper Japanese-style lanterns, paper lanterns are a breathtaking addition to any party. Hanging a dozen paper lanterns hanging from a tree for an outdoor party isn't too difficult, and such a simple gesture will impress your guests.

Twinkle lights are another alternative for party lighting, and these lights are different from the festive blasts of color usually seen on Christmas trees. Consider stringing them around doorframes, along the ceiling, around a buffet table or up a staircase for indoor drama. Outdoors, the possibilities are endless as twinkle light strands can outline patio umbrella canopies or awnings, make trees stand out against the darkness or edge patio or deck lines.

No matter which form of lighting you choose, use common sense regarding safety. Choose candles with a sturdy base so they don't tip over, and keep them out of reach of guests, especially children. As for electric lights, make sure the cords are out of the way so no one trips over them.
