Ideas for Decorating an Anniversary Cake

Whether you are celebrating a landmark anniversary or just want to mark the day with something delicious, an anniversary cake should be included in any list for anniversary planning. Everyone likes dessert and aside from it being delicious, an anniversary cake can make the perfect showpiece to honor the devoted couple.

First, decide what kind of cake you want to have. If the couple has a favorite flavor, then that would be appropriate. If they are open to any option, keep in mind what the guests might like most. For instance, carrot cake may be delicious to some, but is less popular than chocolate or vanilla. The type of cake can also help reflect the theme of the party. Ruby represents the 40th anniversary, so red velvet cake would be appropriate for this occasion. Likewise, if the anniversary is a silver or golden anniversary, you can use silver or gold accents in the decorations.

In your anniversary planning, try to use any details from the original day to add to the party. If you have a good picture of the original wedding cake, have a bakery make a replica; you can also tie in the original wedding colors or flowers to the decorations on the cake. Another option is to obtain a good copy of a wedding photo and have a bakery airbrush the photo onto the cake.

If you want an anniversary cake that is entirely new, try centering it around a hobby or interest the couple now shares. A widely traveled couple might appreciate a cake decorated in the theme of their favorite vacation spot, such as Hawaii. A couple who plays golf may enjoy a cake decorated as a putting green. For a more personal touch, you can make the cake yourself, or give the job to a budding baker in the family. If you expect a lot of guests, you can still keep the cake as the main showpiece without making it large enough to accommodate many people. Supplement by serving individual cakes that match the anniversary cake.
