Baby Shower for Second Baby

By: Jennifer Flaten

Baby shower etiquette is a little different for the second baby. It is still a joyous occasion that deserves celebration, but there are some small differences you should know. Keep in mind that there is more to a baby shower than just gifts. A baby shower is a chance for friends and family to celebrate a new addition to the family.

Who to Invite
Generally, a second-child baby shower is only for family and close friends. If you have moved and made new friends, have new co-workers or a very large circle of friends, including friends who missed your first baby shower, feel free to invite these people to your shower.

It is a nice idea to include the sibling-to-be in the baby shower preparations. This helps the child feel connected to the new baby.

Gifts or No Gifts?
One way to approach a baby shower for a second child is to focus on what is different about the second baby. Is the new baby a different gender than the first baby? Consider having a pink- or blue-themed shower. Another gender-specific party is an "It's a Girl" or "It's a Boy" shower. The guests can bring boy- or girl-specific items.

If several years have passed between the first baby and the second, a safety themed baby shower is a good way to make sure you have all the latest and safest baby gear. New safety features appear every year, and the shower can help the parents-to-be prepare their home for the new baby.

A baby supplies shower is a great way to help the mom stock up on baby needs. What new mom can't use diapers, wipes and washcloths?

If the second baby is the same gender as the first, and it's only been a year since the last baby, chances are that the mom has most of the essential baby supplies, including a crib, bedding and onesies. In this case, it's perfectly acceptable to eliminate gifts from the shower. Have a casserole party or backyard barbecue to bring everyone together and celebrate the coming child.

You could also have a shower to pamper the mom to be. A new mom with a baby on the way and another child at home could certainly use a variety of soothing lotions and scented candles.
