How to Make a Diaper Wreath

By: Helen Polaski

Learn how to make a diaper wreath and you will always have a great baby shower gift idea. What's more diaper wreaths are easy to make, serve as baby shower decorations and then the new mom can use the diapers when the the shower is over.

A Practical Gift
Diaper wreaths make a great gift and they also make a great door decoration. If you're making a diaper wreath, use colors that match the colors used in the baby's room. That way the new mom can hang her baby's diaper wreath on the bedroom door. The display will last as long as mom's stash of diapers lasts. Once the stash of diapers is gone, the diaper wreath will be dismantled and used.

Decorating Baby Diaper Wreaths
When you create a diaper wreath, use the same method as you would use when decorating a Christmas wreath. After the diapers have been added to a Styrofoam wreath, add some fun baubles, like baby bottles, baby washcloths, teething rings, small stuffed animals, a brush and comb set, booties and a bonnet along with a few picture frames and a couple of rattles. The idea is to decorate the wreath with essentials that baby will need in the first six months of life. Only use lightweight items so that the diapers won't tear and so everything stays together.

Materials:

1 Styrofoam wreath (18 to 20 inches works well)
20 newborn disposable diapers
1 package rubber bands
2 spools cloth ribbon, ¼" or ½" thick
2 rattles
1 pair booties
1 picture frame
2 plastic baby bottles
1 brush and comb set
3 or 4 sample size bottles of shampoo and lotion
2 baby bibs
1 teething ring
1 small stuffed animal

Start with a clean, flat surface such as the kitchen table. Wash and dry the Styrofoam wreath and place it on the table. Open one diaper at a time and wrap the diaper over the wreath, from the inside, so that the front of the diaper is visible from the front of the wreath and the back of the diaper is visible from the back of the wreath. Do not open the diaper flaps.

While holding the diaper in place, warp a rubber band around the diaper, along the outside of the wreath, but as close to the foam wreath as possible. This will hold the diaper in place. Continue until the diapers have been added all the way around and the Styrofoam is completely covered. This usually requires about 20 diapers. When you have added diapers all the way around, go back and cover the rubber bands with ribbon.

Carefully tie the baby gifts or baby items onto the front of the wreath, making sure to balance their weight evenly on the wreath. Too many items on one side and the wreath will tip to that side. After you have tied on all of the items, find the side that is the heaviest. Tie a ribbon on the opposite side to use as a hanger.

If you don't know what the new baby will need, you can tie on dollar bills in place of the baby essentials. If the wreath is being given by more than one person, an office gift, for instance, pass the wreath and a card around. Allow everyone to add their name to the card and money to the wreath in whatever denomination they choose. The easiest way to place money on a diaper wreath is to lay the money out flat and either fold it accordion-style or roll it up, then tie it securely to the wreath.
