Quick and Easy Poker Party Planning Tips

By: Arianna Georgi

Organizing a poker party is easy and cheap if you follow a few simple poker planning tips.

It may seem obvious, but having the necessary tools to play poker is the first step to organizing a successful game. No one wants to show up at your house ready to play only to find that you don't have a proper table top, you don't have enough chairs or your deck consists only of novelty cards. Make sure you have everything you need before you suggest the game at your house.

If you are playing for money, one vital element you may not think of needing is small change. Make a trip to bank, and cash in some larger bills for fives, ones and even quarters. Since hosting at your house means you will most likely be the bank, it is good to be prepared. Small change makes it easier at the end of the night when people need to cash out.

Before the poker game starts, make sure you run over the house rules with the guests. If you plan to be strict on the terms of betting, or will be raising the blind a certain amount every few minutes, make sure everyone is clear on the rules. Laying them out early on will prevent disagreements later in the game. It is also a good idea to have a print out of general rules and the order of hands, available for any poker newbies.

A good party, poker or otherwise, almost always involves snacks and drinks. For a poker party, make sure the snacks are bite-sized or can be easily eaten while playing. Make sure the drinks are easy, too. No one wants to have to keep getting up to mix elaborate drinks or trying to balance a plate and their cards while playing.

With the popularity of poker on the rise, you'll be surprised how many of your friends are interested when you propose a game. Most tabletops seat ten maximum, so make sure you limit the number of invitees. Then set-up the table, lay the food out, get the bank in order and go over the rules. Now you are on your way to playing, and hosting, a successful poker game in the comfort of your own home.
