How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

By: Jennifer Maughan

One major annoyance from spending time outside is the never-ending presence of mosquitoes. While usually not dangerous, mosquito bites can be painfully itchy for days afterward, and you need to know how to get rid of mosquitoes or at least keep them at bay.

Know Their Habits. It's important to know when mosquitoes are out and about. The peak hours for mosquitoes are at dusk and dawn, so try to limit any outdoor activities at those times.

What They Like. Mosquitoes are attracted to perspiration and heat, so, if you are outside during these times, try not to do anything active. Mosquitoes are also attracted to sweet-smelling lotions and soaps, so if you know you're going to be outside at dusk, try wearing unscented lotions, and avoid using perfume. Some species of mosquitoes are attracted to light, so keep low-level lights near doors and entryways to discourage the mosquitoes from entering your house.

Repel Them. Many insect repellents are designed to prevent mosquito bites. Deet is proven to be the most effective mosquito repellent formula. Another way to keep the bites away is to wear long sleeves and pants if you know you're going to be outside, especially at peak mosquito hours.

Also, certain plants can prevent mosquitoes from bothering you. Marigolds, peppermint, catnip, basil and thyme are just a few blooms said to act as natural insect repellents, so plant plenty on your property.

There are also "bug zappers" and mosquito traps available for purchase, but those can be expensive and only take care of the adult mosquitoes. Finally, citronella candles can be placed around the gathering area and lit to keep mosquitoes away.

Stop Them From Breeding. Take a close look at your surroundings. Mosquitoes tend to breed where there is stagnant water, so make sure you don't have any stagnant puddles in your yard or by your picnic site. This can also include water sitting in buckets, birdbaths or even your pet's water dish.
