Fun Teenage Party Games

By: Alice Langholt

These fun teenage party games don't prove who is the smartest or most talented, but they can provide plenty of surprises for any event:

Word Guessing Games
Teams are encouraged to guess a word from clues given. This type of game has many versions, such as Password, Outburst and Taboo. In Taboo, the object of the game is for a player to have their partner or partners guess the word on their card without using the word itself or five additional words listed on the card. It's fun to watch the person try not to say the word on the card while offering up some word or reference that will get his partner to say the right word.

Guessing Another Person's Answers
In these games, players will guess what another person will choose as their opinion about an issue or question. Popular games that fall under this umbrella are Scruples, Party Pooper and Apples to Apples. For example, Apples to Apples involves comparing different nouns to one adjective card, with the judge making the decision of which noun submitted to go with the adjective card is the best choice. Since it's a matter of opinion, it requires no previous knowledge or skill and instead relies on people to second guess the judge. Players may find themselves trying to decide which best goes with "refreshing": "Brad Pitt," "ice cream," "the North Pole" or "a snow day."

Drawing or Acting
Let aspiring actors or artists show off while giving other team members a clue to the words that they need to guess for a correct answer. Games that fall under this category include Pictionary, Charades, Squint and Catch Phrase. Catch Phrase is played in two teams, and each player tries to get their team to say the word displayed in the disc before time runs out. A clue-giver can make any physical gesture and give almost any verbal clue. Rules prohibit rhyming clues, giving the first letter of the word, providing the number of syllables or saying part of the word in the clue (e.g., "worry" for "worry wart").
