Valentine's Day Banner Ideas

Try one of these great Valentine's Day banner ideas to create a great homemade Valentine's Day gift.

Glue pretty scrapbooking paper, cotton fabric or gift wrap to lightweight cardboard. Cereal box cardboard or poster board are both the perfect weight. Then cut simple heart shapes from the paper. You may want to do this using decorative scissors. I made my hearts about five inches high. Next, write one letter of your message on each heart with gold or silver glitter glue. Let the glitter glue dry thoroughly before you move on to the next step so that you don't smear the letters.

Once the letters are dry, it is time to punch holes in your hearts. If you made your hearts about five inches high, punch a holes about an inch and a half from the top of the heart on each side. If the hearts are smaller, you may need to punch the holes a bit higher. To make the banner sturdier, you may want to use eyelets to reinforce the holes.

Now comes the fun part, decorating the hearts. Glue pretty rickrack, narrow trim, or sequins around the edges of some of the hearts. Add a small photo of you and your valentine to one of the hearts. Punch a hole in the bottom of one of the hearts and hang a pretty charm from it. Glue doily bits to some of the hearts. Embellish the hearts until you are happy with the final effect.

When you are finished decorating the hearts, it is time for the final step. You will need to find some narrow ribbon or thick yarn in Valentine's Day colors. Thread the heart pieces onto the ribbon or yarn. You will need to begin threading by going into the hole on the left-front corner of the heart. Otherwise, you will end up with the yarn or ribbon running across the front of each heart.

When your banner is finished, hang it in a spot where your valentine is sure to see it. Of course, you don't have to stop there. A handwritten letter expressing your love, heart-shaped pancakes or sandwiches, or even a single rose in a vase are all romantic, but inexpensive, Valentine's Day gift ideas.
